Laboratory Assistant

Purpose of the job
Based in Weert, the Netherlands, as a professional R&D Laboratory Assistant, you will report to the TTC- Physical Laboratory Team leader. You will participate in projects of Production, TTC-Excellence, TTC-Innovation, Quality and Compliance on many research and support topics. The individual team member has strengths in a range of critical physical techniques such as tensile testing, density testing, out-door-weathering, accelerated weathering, bomb-calorimetry and fire-testing. As a team member you are expected to focus on physical methodology and development yielding a growth in know-how of our products. You will work closely with the Businesses to build strong internal networks within Arpa, Trespa, Westag & Getalit and others.

Role and responsibilities
Support and assist in and report on activities related to resin development, paper and paper impregnation, coating development, HPL development and other support activities for Arpa, Trespa, Westag & Getalit and potentially other international companies joining the group for production and R&D under supervision of a technician, project manager, team leader or laboratory manager. This is performed by means of supporting, preparation and testing of raw-materials, intermediates and final products. Typically, materials are prepared for testing and analysis in the workshop by e.g. milling/pressing or in the laboratory by e.g. sample preparation, so physical- and chemical analysis and simple characterization of the material can be performed by the laboratory assistant. Results will be documented and reported to both, an internal- (e.g. laboratory request) or external applicant (e.g. R&D or support request) on request. Besides this, you are an excellent team player, pro-active person and able to independently plan and finalize your daily and weekly activities.

Your responsibility
Support different departments by:

• The use, maintenance and calibration of equipment for sample preparation and testing.
• The use of hard- and software for automated equipment for sample preparation and testing.
• Operating laboratory equipment and pilot equipment for sample preparation and testing.
• Assist in further standardizing and automating routine measurements and determinations.
• Implementation of new measurement methods (e.g. for new “customers”).
• Performing chemical and physical analysis.
• Basic interpretation of the results and observations by statistical means.
• Documentation and reporting of the test results in English language.
• Planning own work with the guidance of a worklist.
• Active participation in project teams.
• Communication of the results to the applicant.
• Comply with Lifesaving rules, Safety, Health and Environment principles at Trespa and 5S rules in laboratory.
• Achieving a “good” performance on each of the Trespa Values (Behave with integrity, take responsibility and be transparent).

Examples of the work to be carried out are pressing, milling and sawing of HPL material, sample preparation and more complex physical and chemical analysis.

Your profile

• MBO+ degree in Chemistry, preferably Physical Chemistry or similar level gained by experience.
• Aware of Best Laboratory Practices 
• Experienced level on computer handling of MS-Office, SharePoint, SAP, EMMA etc.
• Basic level in statistics and coating technology (CV1a/1b).
• Fluent in English (level B1) and Dutch, both spoken and written;
• Can work under supervision without daily guidance.
• Follows procedures and reacts on guidance.
• Can compile and interpret results from different resources.
• Focus on throughput and output and can multitask.
• Recognizes repeating processes and can participate in them.
• Escalates problems when occurring.
• Excellent communication skills, enabling you to initiate contacts, supporting people and reporting on the progress of projects and results.
• Pro-active attitude, excellent team player with a hands-on mentality.
