Vacature: Research Software Engineer - focus on HPC and Cloud Support

Job description

As a Research Software Engineer focusing on High Performance Computing (HPC) and Cloud Support, you will work closely with academics, supporting them in navigating the landscape of HPC-solutions and Cloud providers in research projects. You will be part of the newly formed team of Research Software Engineers to further develop our local computing facility, the Data Science Research Infrastructure (DSRI), and collaborate on a roadmap for Research Infrastructure support. You will work with stakeholders to integrate these services, and provide central training coordinated by the Data Stewardship Services at the University Library.

You will be engaged in:

  • Collaborating with academics to understand their HPC and cloud services needs and requirements, ensuring effective use of resources.
  • Developing, maintaining, and improving guidelines for HPC and research cloud services at Maastricht University.
  • Collaborate with external Digital Competence Centers and national Research IT organisations to coordinate resources such as SURF Research Cloud to enhance our services portfolio.
  • Supporting researchers to manage their code in the local Gitlab installation, publishing FAIR metadata, and making efficient use of the DSRI resources.
  • Teaching workshops on DSRI and HPC options, including code documentation, version control, software citation, publishing, and licensing.

Job Requirements

We are looking for you if you are a proactive team player who can autonomously manage tasks and responsibilities. You should be capable of translating complex concepts from HPC and cloud services into understandable guidelines and training for a non-expert audience. You can connect the needs of researchers, legal requirements, and policy ambitions concerning research software management with solutions from data stewardship and ICT.

Furthermore, you have:

  • A master’s degree and experience in academic research environments, preferably in the high performance computing or cloud services administration.
  • An Open Science mindset; familiarity with initiatives such as the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is a plus.
  • A good command of the English language and strong interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with both academic researchers and technical experts. In the long term, a good command of the Dutch language is also expected. Language training can be provided where necessary.
  • Familiarity in creating and maintaining HPC and cloud services documentation since you will directly support researchers in finding appropriate solutions for their needs.
  • A service-oriented mindset, other people will see you as a coach.

What we offer

As Research Software Engineer at Universiteits Bibliotheek, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:


  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 10 according to UFO profile Data Steward, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €3226,00 and €5090,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
